Loosing the battle to HIV/AIDS

New York City continues to have the highest new HIV infections than any other state in the U.S. among women of color. As of 2004 more than 73,500 New York women have HIV or AIDS, while 22,224 are actually dying from this disease since the beginning of the epidemic.

From the above statement Congressman John Murtha continues to say bring the troops home. While, I have not been overly active opposing the war it is clear that the majority of America has caught up to the 70% of Blacks who oppose the war.

Happy Veterans Day

While most like a good party, the Veteran Day parade is usually a great giant one. The activities are long on speeches, short on actions, plenty of food, drums, music and full of accolades and diatribes. Unfortunately after the festivities are over our ex-military personnel (veterans) still find themselves in the same painful and distressful state they were in before all the platitudes of that day, month, and eventually year.

SUPPORT THE WARRIOR!!!

Today, New York State has withheld over $600,000.00 dollars which usually go towards Homeless Veteran Programs. As to date the NYC Council has appropriated zero dollars for the improvement of veteran services; (BVSJ for example has received no funding).

HIV and the Military

In reading Zahid Rathore’s research on HIV-1 Incidence among Active Duty Army Personnel, 1985-2003, many important factors have been identified dealing with the African American male population. Zahid contends that Blacks in the military have higher HIV incidents in several areas compared to other ethnic populations, e.g. gender, age, marital status, race/ethnicity and length of service. It is well understood that HIV/AIDS exist in the military, but is very seldom researched or talked about.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BVSJ
While we worked on April 18th, BVSJ became 26 years in existence. Happy Birthday founders, Board of Directors, V.P.’s, managers and our diligent workers. We have become one of the leading agencies in our community. We have operated Pamoja House for ten years, Uzima for three years, 119th SRO for soon to be one year and 665 Willoughby Avenue for four years this May. We have some dynamic departments and programs which are unique, efficient and envied by others.

Say Bro Got A Dime?
Let me drop a dime on you. 911. African-American women are one of the groups with the higher rates of infection with the HIV Virus. As you know the HIV virus leads to AIDS. A recent report showed that African-American women have twice the rate of infection of the national average. A major contribution to this growth is males. Many reports continue to indicate that many males are experiencing bi-sexual practices known as the “Down Low”. This seems to be where some males are having sex with other males on the quiet while posing as normal males inside or outside of marriage.
