HOUSING DIVISION AND DEVELOPMENT

BVSJ’s Housing Department has developed an extensive portfolio of diverse housing opportunities for veterans and marginalized New Yorkers. BVSJ efficiently manages several housing components of supportive housing for chronically homeless veterans, veterans with substance abuse or mental illness, female veterans with children, those living with HIV/AIDS, chronically homeless adults, and veterans and their families. BVSJ offers housing opportunities for anyone that qualifies and lives within the five boroughs of New York.

SHELTER SERVICES

Black Veterans for Social Justice (BVSJ) Shelter Operations Program is BVSJ’s largest Supportive Housing platform. Over the last 30 years, BVSJ has serviced thousands of single adult men and, recently, servicing women. BVSJ shelter operations are expanding under BVSJ’s leadership, with two additional shelters established by the end of 2023.

PAMOJA HOUSE

Pamoja House is a single adult men’s facility in a Historical Armory in Central Brooklyn. Pamoja Annex services 198 clients. Provide supportive services to men from all age groups designed to assist men in reducing barriers to permanent, sustainable housing. The foundation of the services model used is rooted in the belief that anyone willing to take responsibility for their own life is given the proper support and assistance with addressing barriers that lead to homelessness. Pamoja Annex services are structured in trauma-informed care methodology. It has been proven this approach increases the opportunity for residents to become productive members of society.

RED CARPET ANNEX

Red Carpet Annex was the first Annex under BVSJ to open. We provide supportive housing services to 62 single adult men. Red Carpet Annex follows the commitment set for by the founders of Black Veterans for Social Justice, Inc. Red Carpet currently serves 62 single adult men. Red Carpet staff work under the principle all clients are individuals, and services must be individualized to meet the client’s needs.

KRESHMA ANNEX

Kreshma Annex serves 114 clients inside a commercial hotel. We work hard to get our clients housing so they can return to the living world.

LINDEN ANNEX

Linden Annex provides temporary shelter support for 54 single adult men. Clients are connected to community-based education, health (medical and mental) programs and employment. Clients are connected to programs that aid in job preparation, skills training, educational growth, employment and financial counseling.

OASIS ANNEX.

Oasis Annex serves 92 single adult men in supportive shelter services. Oasis staff uses a trauma-informed approach to client services and recognizes the need to treat individuals with dignity and respect throughout the transitional process. Through holistic case management and evidence-based practices, BVSJ Shelter Operations endeavors to help single adults gain the necessary tools for independent living.

HUD HARP HOUSING ASSISTANCE

Works with shelter residents and staff to provide case management and housing counseling services using a Housing First, person-centered approach that methodically addresses multiple barriers to housing permanency. The program provides supportive services to at least 60 veterans and community members with histories of chronic homelessness, substance abuse and other challenges who have received rental subsidies, including Emergency Housing Vouchers, HUD VASH, and City FHEPS.

PERMANENT HOUSING SERVICES

UZIMA RESIDENCE

UZlMA Residence.opened its doors on April 1, 2002. UZlMA Residence is a congregate permanent supportive housing facility with 14 studio units for persons living with HIV/AIDS. BVSJ-UZlMA Residence is a contractor for HRA/HASA, HPD National EquiIty Fund and (LISC) Local Initiative Support Corporation. UZlMA Residence is staffed with a Program Director, Case Manager, Substance Abuse Counselor, and Recreational Coordinator: 24-hour security and on-site maintenance. UZlMA Residence provides our consumers with Case Management services, Substance Abuse Counseling for individuals with a substance abuse history and therapeutic recreational activities for persons with special needs.

WAZOBIA HOUSE

A 42-unit studio apartment building was designed specifically for the formerly homeless and residents with mental health disabilities.

RESURRECTION HOMES

In the heart of Bedford Stuyvesant, BVSJ has recently completed gut renovation on seven brownstone properties providing affordable housing for Section-8 and working families.

HUD I 

We provide rapid rehousing to homeless individuals with an annual income at or below the 30% average median income of New York City. Formerly incarcerated veterans are also served by this program, which houses and serves at least 23 individuals in scattered apartments in New York City. This project aims to rapidly house homeless adults in safe, affordable housing that fits individual needs and permanency planning.

VETERANS PLACE

Veterans Court (210 Hart St) and Veterans Residence (495 Sterling Place) were specifically developed to provide low-income housing for veterans and their families currently residing in the NYC shelter system or on the verge of becoming homeless.

SUPPORTIVE HOUSING PROGRAM

BVSJ manages UZIMA Residence and Wazobia House. BVSJ Supportive Housing Program (SHP) employees assist tenants using housing as a cornerstone for upward mobility. Supported Housing Program provides ongoing rental assistance to adults with a special focus on veterans, families from all five B in New York City, adults experiencing homelessness, prisons and psychiatric center with mental disabilities who meet the program criteria. BVSJ pays 70% of the rent, and consumers to pay 30% monthly. BVSJ SHP team collectively assists in ensuring tenants have wrap-around service, which includes housing, therapist, medication, adult care program, home health aide, NA/ AA meeting (if needed), pantry bag, money management training, and access to staff 24 emergency number.

In partnership with The Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Program, BVSJ provides services to meet the needs of Veterans and their families through outreach, suicide prevention services, connection to VA and community resources.
