John Carter came to New
York in 1935 from Charleston, South Carolina. His
brother, David, was active in the movement of the Honorable Safi Abdul Hamid.
John worked within the movement in Harlem. From 1942 to 1945, he served in the U. S. Army, assigned to the 366th
Infantry Combat Medical Battalion, 92nd Infantry Division. In 1948, he moved
to Brooklyn and became very active in
community activities. He is a member of the
East Cultural
Center and the Black United Front. He is a Founding Member of Black Veterans
for Social Justice, Inc. Today he holds the position of Treasurer on its Board
of Directors.
